LFDCS Receives Title IV Grant for After School Enrichment

The Lawrence Family Development Charter School (LFDCS) recently received Title IV funding from the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. With these funds, LFDCS is adding new after-school enrichment offerings for its 740 students. Offered during the 2017-18 school year will be: Glee Club, Art Club, Poetry Cub and The Art of Coding for Girls.

According to Sacha Lu, the new LFDCS After School Enrichment Coordinator, “Engaging LFDCS students in art, poetry, music and technology education provide connections to the world and is a unique way of perceiving and communicating. “Seventy-five students in grades 2-8 will be given the opportunity for participation in these new programs which are held once a week for 90 minutes. The sessions include a healthy snack, a literacy component and a hands-on and/or physical activity. Each program culminates in a special session, performance, or demonstration, which develops students’ skills with demonstrating interests and knowledge.”

For the Glee Club, which is currently operating, students in grades 5-8 learn the art of singing as being part of a group. The group also works together to create music. Learning how their voices sound, what tone and strength their voices make, and how their voices contribute to a whole sound is exciting for the students. The Glee Club culminates with a concert, planned and implemented with student input, for students’ classmates and parents.

Poetry Club is designed for students in grade 8 and provides the opportunity for participants to read and write poetry in order to build self-confidence and expressive communication. Various forms of poetry are explored including Hispanic, classic and local poets’ works which are read and discussed, then used as mentor texts for students’ own writing. April is National Poetry Month, so as students complete their work, they are planning a celebration to bring poetry to their school, home and community.

Complementing LFDCS’ focus on STEM growth, The Art of Coding for Girls is being conducted now for girls in grades 6-8. Participants learn that coding is an art and a science in this basic introduction to programming. Design and engineering results on tools for interests or businesses. Students will follow an acclaimed curriculum that includes art/design, literacy, engineering and technical knowledge. The sessions culminate with a demonstration of their work for classmates and parents.

Lastly, scheduled for a late spring start, Art Club students in grades 2-4 will learn theory and techniques of drawing and painting. Each session will result in the creation of a piece of art. Students will also learn and practice how to present art to an audience. Matting and/or framing, deciding on perspective, and offering and accepting constructive feedback will be included. The Art Club will culminate their course by presenting an art show for their classmates and parents.

The XII International Book Fair in Lawrence took place on Friday, October 20 through Sunday, October 22. This year’s book fair was dedicated to Columbia and focused on the importance of early literacy readiness, strategies, resources, bilingualism and brain development. On Saturday, October 21 a parent panel for an adult audience was held at the El-Hefni Health Center and children’s activities took place at the Follett Bookstore located at 420 Common Street. LFDCS third grade student, Cazmeer Cruz, proudly shared his second grade classes’ first published book entitled Our Winter Stories Collection to the parent panel and also participated in the children’s event at the bookstore.

SY’2017-2018 will be the 5th consecutive year that students in the 2nd grade have had their work published in a hard-cover book. The 2nd grade teachers coordinate this effort through Studenttreasures.com. Students are asked to write, edit and illustrate a story that goes along with a class theme.  Last year the theme was “Our Winter Stories,” and students wrote short stories that included ideas like, “If I lived in a snow globe…” or “If I could be a super hero…”  This project helps bring together student creativity and experience with the publishing process in writing. It’s a great way for students to see their stories come to life and become real published writers!

Academic Program


Our program includes a dual-language model with students learning in both Spanish and English. The goal is to enable students to attain advanced levels of functional proficiency in two languages and to promote understanding of and appreciation for the cultures represented by the languages studied. The primary objective is to teach students language and literacy skills that will allow them to function effectively in both their personal and professional lives. We feel the development of literacy will foster a love of learning to read, and then the competency of reading to learn.

Leadership


We believe there is a strong link between school success and effective and consistent leadership. As a result, our Board of Trustees, is composed of parents, alumni and community leaders and provides valuable oversight and focuses on creating and upholding policies that support our students and their families. Our administrative structure consists of a Principal and three Heads of School who manage daily operations and discipline. Leadership from the ranks of the teaching staff is also highly evident, as teachers improve curriculum and serve as mentors to novice educators.

Community Partnerships


Our goal is to work with many individuals and organizations in order to provide the resources necessary to enhance and enrich the lives of our students, both during the day and in our extended day and extended year programs. The quality and breadth of our community partnership program is unique. We work with an extensive array of local private schools, parent and community volunteers and organizations providing on-site programs.

Parent Partners


We believe that when parents are actively involved in their children’s education, students have a better chance of succeeding academically. At LFDCS parents are required to be active participants in the education of their children. Parents serve on our Board of Trustees, participate in training programs designed to help them work with their children at home, volunteer in the classroom and on field trips and assist with fundraising initiatives. All parents sign a contract that places high expectations on their participation both at school and at home.
