Breakfast in the Classroom
Breakfast in the Classroom gives students a chance to start their day with a healthy meal alongside their classmates - helping them feel energized, focused, and ready to learn. It also builds a positive morning routine and a sense of community as students begin the day together.
Breakfast will be served right in the classroom each morning and will include balanced, student-friendly options. To help your child fully enjoy and participate in this experience, we encourage students to have breakfast at school with their classmates whenever possible.
The pilot program will be rolled out in phases, with one grade in each building participating for 2025-26: Grade 3 will begin the program on May 4, Grade 7 on May 11, Grade 1 on May 18, and K-1 on May 26.
Please see below for additional information. If you have any additional questions about the program, please reach out to Rachel Sanchez, School Nutrition & Wellness Coordinator at , 978-216-0461 ext.187.
Frequently Asked Questions
How is this different from how my child is currently eating breakfast at school?
Breakfast is currently served in the cafeteria and eaten there. If the student has not finished breakfast before it's time to go to class, they have the option to bring to the classroom and finish it there. With Breakfast in the Classroom, students will be brought to their classrooms from the cafeteria at 7:45am, and will be served breakfast directly in their classrooms.
Will students get a breakfast choice?
Breakfast choices will continue to be offered according to posted school menus. All students, regardless of participation in the pilot, will follow the same menu.
When will breakfast be served? Does this impact the morning schedule?
Students will continue to go to the cafeteria upon arrival in the morning. They will be dismissed to their classrooms at 7:45am. Breakfast will then be available in their classroom starting at 7:45am, and students will have until 8:15 to eat. Breakfast time may be incorporated into the morning routine such as morning meeting and any start of day activities.
How much time will students have to eat? Will they be doing classwork during this time, or do they have the chance to socialize with peers?
Students will have 20-30 minutes to eat in their classroom, and will be encouraged engage with peers ahead of the morning meeting and any start of day activities. They will also have socialization time in the cafeteria prior to dismissal to classrooms at 7:45am.
If my child has an allergy, how is that addressed in the classroom?
Meals for students with allergies will be identified by allergy type, not student name, and will be served in a prepared container.
Is breakfast still free?
Yes, in May 2023 Massachusetts passed a law providing free school meals for all K-12 students.
Will lunch continue to be served in the cafeteria?
Yes, there will be no change to lunch.
Will my child in another grade at LFDCS also have this?
There will be one grade piloting the program in each building for 2025-26:
Grade 3 starting May 4
Grade 7 starting May 11
Grade 1 starting May 18
K1 starting May 26
