Boston, MA – June 25, 2026 – Latinos for Education hosted its fifth annual Latino Educators Shine Awards at the MCLE Conference Center, Boston, on June 23, 2026. Andreina Croes, Head of School for Grades 1 and 2 at Lawrence Family Development Charter School (LFDCS) was recognized for her achievements. This year, more than 50 Latino educators from across the Commonwealth were honored by state legislators for the trailblazing work they do in the classroom every day.

Croes was recognized by State Representative Frank Moran and Senator Pavel Payano for her dedication and commitment as an educator, as well as for the incredible positive impact she has on students, families, and the broader community. She was one of 15 charter public school educators from across the state to be recognized.

Senator Liz Miranda (Democrat - 2nd Suffolk) and Representative Michael P. Kushmerek (Democrat - 3rd Worcester) were also honored at this year's awards ceremony for their legislative work in advancing educator diversity and retention. The ceremony featured remarks from Miranda, Kushmerek; and Dr. Regina Robinson, Special Assistant to the Commissioner. Also speaking were key leaders from Latinos for Education, including Amanda Fernandez, CEO and Founder; Jacqueline Monterroso, Director of Policy and Advocacy; and Migdalia Diaz, COO and Massachusetts Interim Executive Director.

Andreina Croes is dedicated to creating spaces where every student feels proud of who they are and where they've come from. Her goal for students is to understand that their heritage is an asset, and that they possess the confidence and ability to pursue their dreams.

Drawing from her Venezuelan heritage, Andreina brings a unique perspective to her leadership. She fosters meaningful connections with families by speaking the same language as them and by sharing similar cultural experiences. She understands the joys and challenges of being an immigrant and part of an immigrant family, and uses that understanding to advocate for her students and amplify their voices. At the heart of Andreina's leadership is a commitment to creating a community at LFDCS where every student's identity is celebrated and loved.

We're seeking dedicated, passionate community stakeholders, parent representatives, and alumni to serve on the LFDCS Board of Trustees. 

Per the MA Department of Elementary Education, "A strong board defines the mission of the school, develops school policies and changes them when appropriate, hires qualified personnel to manage the school's day-to-day operations and holds them accountable for meeting established goals, and formulates a long-range plan and charter school accountability plan that will ensure the school's continued stability.In addition to its many other responsibilities, the board must ensure that the school is complying with all of the state and federal laws that apply to the school and that the school is operating in accordance with its charter and with any approved amendments to its charter."*

Our Board of Trustees members commit to attending monthly board meetings, participating in committee work, and supporting school events if needed. This typically is 3-5 hours per month, which may vary depending on Board and school needs. A Board of Trustee member can serve two three-year terms maximum, for a potential six-year period of time serving.

Lawrence, MA - April 28, 2026 - Lawrence Family Development Charter School (LFDCS) today announced the appointment of Meredith Denu as Head of School for grades 5–6, effective for the 2026–2027 academic year. The selection follows a thorough and competitive search process led by the school's Head of School Hiring Committee.

"Meredith has consistently demonstrated a deep commitment to our students, families, and staff," said Dr. Darshan Thakkar, Superintendent of LFDCS. "Her leadership, instructional expertise, and understanding of our school community make her exceptionally well-suited for this role as we continue to grow."

Denu brings five years of classroom experience at LFDCS, where she has served as a third and fourth grade teacher. She holds a Master's degree in Elementary Education and recently completed the Performance Assessment for Leaders (PALS) program, earning her Principal/Assistant Principal licensure. In addition to her teaching role, Denu has served as Summer School Coordinator for the past two years, mentored new teachers for three years, and has been an active member of the School Site Council since 2022.

"I'm incredibly excited to step into the role of Head of School for fifth and sixth grade," said Denu. "Having taught at LFDCS, I've had the opportunity to get to know many of our students and families, and I truly value the strong sense of community here. I look forward to continuing to support our teachers, building meaningful relationships with students and families, and helping create a positive and engaging environment where every student feels supported and inspired to learn."

The announcement comes as LFDCS continues its planned expansion. The school has been approved to increase enrollment from 800 to 1,000 students by 2030. To support this growth, LFDCS will expand its use of the Quintana Center as an additional Upper School location. Currently home to science classrooms and select school events held in the Foley Library, the Quintana Center will house all Grade 8 classrooms beginning in the 2026–2027 school year, followed by Grade 7 in 2027–2028.

Grades 5 and 6 will remain at the current Upper School campus under Denu's leadership, while Nicole Arpin will continue to serve as Head of School for grades 7–8. 

The Parent Advisory Council of Lawrence Family Development Charter School is a state-mandated parent/school planning group to advise the school on matters related to English Language Learners and Special Education. Every parent of English Learner and Special Education students at LFDCS is welcome and encouraged to participate in the meeting.

This meeting will be a workshop about successful summer activities. It will be held virtually on TEAMS on Wednesday, 4/29 at 4:00pm.

LFDCS After School Clubs are designed to provide students with opportunities to explore, be creative, have fun, and build meaningful relationships. They are lead by teachers, paraeducators, and contracted services. Clubs take place in the afternoons after the school day ends and include a snack.

We're excited to be featured on Cafeteria Confessions, a national podcast hosted by Emily Chatelain, CEO of the School Food and Wellness Group. The episode highlights how we're using student voice, sustainability initiatives, and wellness-driven decision-making to reshape the school meal experience.

In the episode, listeners hear from Rachel Sanchez, School Dietitian and Wellness Specialist, alongside students and staff, as they share how hands-on engagement, regular taste tests, and intentional feedback loops have helped build trust and participation in the school meal program.

A major focus of the conversation is our school's comprehensive recycling and composting program, which has diverted approximately 93 percent of cafeteria waste from landfills and saved the school an estimated $75,000 in one year. Through education, clear systems, and active student involvement, sustainability has become part of the school's daily culture, with students taking these practices beyond the cafeteria and into their homes.

The episode also explores how LFDCS centers student voice through surveys, taste tests, and wellness committee involvement, using feedback to make real-time menu changes. Students describe feeling heard and respected, while staff emphasize the importance of presentation, nutrition standards, and culturally responsive offerings in shaping a positive cafeteria experience.

Every year, each public school and school district in Massachusetts receives a report card from the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE). Just as your child's report card shows how they are doing in different subjects, the school's report card is designed to show families how our school is doing in different areas. 

The report card includes multiple measures of a school's performance – more than just MCAS scores. It represents a new way of looking at school performance, by providing information on student achievement, teacher qualifications, student learning opportunities, and more.

Congratulations to our December Staff Members of the Month! These staff members exemplify collaboration, positivity, and growth. We are lucky to have them as part of the LFDCS team!

Rosmery Mejia Mancebo (K2 Paraprofessional): Ms. Mejia Mancebo always comes to work with a smile. She has a positive "can do it" attitude and is always open to learning and feedback. She is kind and collaborative and seeks out solutions when there are challenges. Ms. Mejia Mancebo is truly a remarkable member of our team.

Laura Pawlyk (G1 Teacher): Ms. Pawlyk is just one of those people that were seemingly born to be a teacher. She goes above and beyond her job requirements each and every day. Ms. Pawlyk is consistently reflecting on her students' needs, sharing additional resources for her team, and always makes suggestions of how we can further student learning. She is a tremendous teacher, has an amazing creative way to teach and keep the students focused, she is also super respectful and very helpful with anyone and anything. LFDCS is lucky to have someone like her.

Hannah Watson (G3 Teacher): Ms. Watson has been a wonderful addition to the Lower School! Her Morning Meeting is engaging and addresses the SEL needs of her students. Ms. Watson's students enjoy being in her classroom and it is truly a happy place to grow and learn. She works hard to create a safe learning environment for her students. I have noticed how students in her classroom really shout each other out and feel like they can be themselves. She is a great team player and deeply cares for student success!

Lenny Paulino (Paraprofessional/LTS Health): Mr. Paulino is someone that has a "can do" attitude and is always willing to help whenever necessary. He thrives on being given opportunities that challenge him as well as help him grow professionally and personally. His interactions with students are always positive and supportive. Mr. Paulino has stepped up to fill in for the Health teacher position to help things go more smoothly. He is a true team player. 

Please save the date for our Winter Wonderland Concert on Thursday, December 18, 2025, from 5:30 pm - 7:00 pm at the Upper School Gymnasium. The concert will feature special performances by our Step Team, Bucket Drumming, Acting, Academy Choir, and Upper School Choir.

New this year, an event registration link will be sent out the week of December 1st to the families of our student performers. These families will receive priority access for registration and may register for up to two tickets. Please note that one person per registration must be 18+.

Depending on registration numbers, additional tickets may become available on December 12. If so, an updated registration link will be shared via BrightArrow and the LFDCS website. 

Reminder: Lower School Drop-Off Procedure

We've noticed an increase in curbside drop-offs on West Street during morning arrival. For the safety of our students, all drop-offs must take place in the designated car line. Please refer to the below map as a reminder. Thank you for helping us keep everyone safe and traffic moving smoothly this school year.

The Lower School Turkey Trot will take place on Tuesday, November 25. Students may sign up at the Lower School front desk through Friday, November 21. The Turkey Trot is one mile long, 4 laps around the course. 

There will be three race times: Grade 3, Grade 4, and a Staff vs. Alumni Dash.

If students are running, they can wear jeans and bring a change of clothes for the race.

Please note, this event is open only to students and school staff.

The Science and Math Department at LFDCS is excited to launch our Quarterly STEM Challenge. This is an opportunity for students in Lower and Upper Schools to bring real-world problem-solving home and collaborate with their families!

Quarter 2's Challenge: Predict the first day this school year that Lawrence will get more than 1 inch of snow!

Students will research weather data, make a claim, and present their findings creatively. Students can use data from trusted sources like:

• National Weather Service
• National Atmospheric and Oceanic Administration
• National Centers for Environmental Information
• Weather Underground
• The Farmer's Almanac
  
  

Submission Details:

• Formats: Poster, Diorama/3D Model, or Video Presentation
• Online Submission Deadline: December 5
• Physical Submission Window: December 1–5 (drop off at the front desk)
• Judging Criteria: STEM process, use of evidence, and creativity... not just accuracy!
• Winners: One per grade level, announced at the Quarter 2 Awards Ceremony and will get a special prize.
• Celebration: All winners will be honored at the End-of-Year Family Engagement Awards 

Join us for an extra Jeans Day this Friday, 11/14 (11/13 for grades 7 & 8) for a great cause! 

Please bring in either a canned good or $2 to participate. Collection boxes will be at the front desk of every school.

Congratulations to our November Staff Members of the Month! With a mix of old and new faces, this month is proof that everyone can make a difference no matter their years of service. We are extra thankful for you here at LFDCS!

Dianeisi Capellan (K1 Paraprofessional): Ms. Capellan always takes the time to guide and support others, making the work environment positive and comfortable for everyone around her. She consistently shows dedication and reliability. Ms. Capellan often takes initiative to assist in daily routines and approaches each day with a positive attitude.

Liliana Dalmer (G2 Teacher): Ms. Dalmer is a first time teacher and she is doing a great job on tackling the curriculum and managing her classroom. Any student would be lucky to have Ms. Dalmer as their second grade teacher!

Tomas Matos (G3 Teacher): Mr. Matos is always looking for new and better ways to ensure his students are successful. He is a wonderful teacher who always goes above and beyond. Mr. Matos works so hard to look at student data in order to better inform our instruction. His classroom is a safe and comfortable place for learning and having fun! Every time I walk by his classroom the students are engaged and smiling. The students and staff are truly lucky to have a teacher like Mr. Matos on our team!

Juna Temali (Grade 8 ELA Teacher): Since joining the LFDCS community, Ms. Temali has made a remarkable impact. Her kind, calm, and professional demeanor consistently motivates and engages her students. Ms. Temali arrives early each day, thoughtfully preparing her lessons and incorporating personalized touches to ensure they are meaningful and effective. She brings a smile to everyone's faces and keep the environment uplifting and encouraging. Ms. Temali connects with students in a genuine way and works exceptionally well with her teammates. 

Join us for our 8th Annual Family Movie Night on Friday, November 7, from 4:30pm - 6:00pm in the Upper School Gymnasium. This year's student-selected animated movie is Hotel Transylvania. There will be popcorn!

Please note that due to limited space, this event is only for our 3rd and 4th grade students and one parent/guardian chaperone. Each student must be accompanied by a parent or guardian chaperone (age 18 or over). Chaperones are required to sign in at the front desk upon arrival and remain with their student for the entire duration of the movie. Movie Night will conclude at the end of the movie.

Students can bring their special pillow for this event. Parents, you are also asked to bring in your own cushion to sit on. Please do not bring chairs of any kind.

The Parent Advisory Council of Lawrence Family Development Charter School is a state-mandated parent/school planning group to advise the school on matters related to English Language Learners and Special Education.

Every parent of English Learner and Special Education students at LFDCS is welcome and encouraged to participate in the meetings of the PAC. The PAC will participate in the planning of parent workshops and the evaluation of our Special Education and English Learner programs. Members act as advisors to school administrators and governing bodies.

Parent Advisory Council Elections

LFDCS Parent Advisory Council will hold its October meeting and elections of council members on Wednesday, October 29, 2025 in the Foley Library and on Teams (virtual meeting). The Parent Advisory Council leadership is comprised of two co-chairs, a secretary, a membership chair, the Director of Special Education, and the English Language Learner Coordinator.

Unity Day: A Special Twist to This Friday's (10/17) Jeans Day!*

This Friday, we're adding a special twist to Jeans Day in recognition of National Bullying Awareness Month! We invite all students to join our LFDCS Unity Day by wearing jeans and an orange shirt to show their support for kindness, respect, and inclusion throughout our school community. If a student does not wear orange, they are expected to wear their LFDCS uniform shirt.

During October, students will also take part in classroom activities that promote these important values. Thank you for helping us make LFDCS a place where every student feels safe, valued, and supported.

We're excited to recognize our October Staff Members of the Month! Each month, one staff member from each building is selected for exemplifying what it means to be a passionate, collaborative, and dedicated educator.

Jaithian Medina (K1 Paraprofessional): Mr. Medina is the backbone of our school! He is always so helpful, truly cares about kids, and is great at de-escalating students. The kids light up when they see him! Mr. Medina has gone out of his way trying his best to support with behaviors. He is always there to lend a helping hand. Mr. Medina always helps out, no matter what the situation, and always does it with a smile!

Jacob Vazquez (SPED Paraprofessional): Mr. J. has done an amazing job supporting students. He is always helping and being there for others. Mr. J. creates relationships with students and builds trust. He has consistently been a dedicated team member, working hard to ensure that everything that needs to be accomplished gets done. Students often ask for him because he makes them smile and is relatable to all students.

David Grandmaison (Grade 7 Science Teacher): Mr. Grandmaison is always supportive and dependable. Not only will he always be there for support but consistently reminds students of school expecations. He is always communicating constructively and is thinking of creative ways to do academically rigorous instruction. Being on Mr. Grandmaison's team means you will always have a person to go to and succeed with.

Lawrence Family Development Charter School Offers another Year of Meals at No Cost for Students

Lawrence Family Development Charter School will be participating in the National School Lunch Program and the School Breakfast Program. As part of this program, all LFDCS schools will offer healthy meals every school day. The Massachusetts legislature has provided funding to make meals available at no cost to all students during school year 2023-2024, regardless of household income. However, families should still complete a Meal Benefit Application as this provides data for key funding for academic resources and may also connect families to additional benefits. This data will also support the additional funds provided by the Commonwealth for this pilot. Household size and income criteria are used to determine eligibility for free and reduced-price benefits if the household does not receive assistance or the children are not in the other categories mentioned above. Children can get free or reduced-price meals if the household's gross income falls at or below the limits on the Federal Income Eligibility Guideline chart.

Community Eligibility Provision

Lawrence Family Development Charter School will be participating in the National School Lunch Program and the School Breakfast Program. As part of this program, LFDCS schools will offer healthy meals every school day at NO COST to the students due to the implementation of the Community Eligibility Provision for school year 2023-2024. Students will be able to participate in these meal programs without having to pay a fee or submit a household application.
