Grade 1 Presentations on Animals and Their Habitat PDF Print E-mail

Each year the first graders do a research project about an animal and its habitat. They work on it for more than a month beginning after April school vacation. This year, parents were invited to work with their child and other children in the class to build the dioramas that accompany the research paper. There was an amazing turnout of parents wielding paintbrushes and glue along with imaginative props to fill the shoe boxes and transform them into jungles, oceans, deserts and forests. Ms. Barrett, LFDCS Art Teacher, worked with the students to create a clay model of their animal. Students made their cover on the ChromeBooks, but hand wrote the research paper. They practiced reading it, enunciating and speaking loudly to their peers. Presentations of their paper, most of them three or four pages long, their diorama and their animals were held on May 31. Fifty three parents took time out of their day to come in and listen to the papers and ask questions of not just their child but also lots of other children so no child felt left out. The first grade team is so very grateful for the participation of our parents. We appreciate you. Thank you!

 
LFDCS Robotics Team Takes First Place PDF Print E-mail

LFDCS Lego Robotics Team Takes First Prize in Technology and Innovation at the Latino STEM Alliance Competition in Boston!

On Saturday, May 4 the LFDCS Lego Robotics Team, for the second year in a row, took home first prize in Technology and Innovation!  Competition against 12 other inner city schools was high but our students showed that perseverance and teamwork is the best recipe for success when problem solving. Judges recognized our students for improving their robot’s design throughout the event and improving their score with every round of the competition. Congratulations to our Middle School students for showing that LFDCS can compete with any school in the state!”

 
LFDCS Board Honors Grade 7 student Jenilca Sanchez PDF Print E-mail

LFD/LFDCS has a tradition of using student art as the cover to our annual Holiday Card.  Pieces of student art which reflect the holiday season are submitted by the Art Teacher and anonymously chosen by the the Leadership Team. The piece selected is then scanned on the cover of our Holiday Card which is mailed to donors of the organization along with a donor envelope. Thanks to those who donated, we raised over $3,000 for the scholarship fund.

This year's Holiday Card art contest winner, Grade 7 student, Jenilca Sanchez, was honored on Wednesday, January 8, 2019 at the LFDCS Board of Trustees meeting and presented with a framed picture of herself and the Holiday Card by board trustee, Anne Hemmer. A framed picture of the card and the student selected is displayed in the Foley Library along with past year's winners.

Jenilca's parents and brother and sister were also in attendance at the board meeting.

Academic Program


Our program includes a dual-language model with students learning in both Spanish and English. The goal is to enable students to attain advanced levels of functional proficiency in two languages and to promote understanding of and appreciation for the cultures represented by the languages studied. The primary objective is to teach students language and literacy skills that will allow them to function effectively in both their personal and professional lives. We feel the development of literacy will foster a love of learning to read, and then the competency of reading to learn.

Leadership


We believe there is a strong link between school success and effective and consistent leadership. As a result, our Board of Trustees, is composed of parents, alumni and community leaders and provides valuable oversight and focuses on creating and upholding policies that support our students and their families. Our administrative structure consists of a Principal and three Heads of School who manage daily operations and discipline. Leadership from the ranks of the teaching staff is also highly evident, as teachers improve curriculum and serve as mentors to novice educators.

Community Partnerships


Our goal is to work with many individuals and organizations in order to provide the resources necessary to enhance and enrich the lives of our students, both during the day and in our extended day and extended year programs. The quality and breadth of our community partnership program is unique. We work with an extensive array of local private schools, parent and community volunteers and organizations providing on-site programs.

Parent Partners


We believe that when parents are actively involved in their children’s education, students have a better chance of succeeding academically. At LFDCS parents are required to be active participants in the education of their children. Parents serve on our Board of Trustees, participate in training programs designed to help them work with their children at home, volunteer in the classroom and on field trips and assist with fundraising initiatives. All parents sign a contract that places high expectations on their participation both at school and at home.
