K-1 Celebrates Thanksgiving PDF Print E-mail

One of the standards for K-1 Social Studies is to learn about National Holidays and why they are celebrated. Every year K-1 students hear stories about the Pilgrims arriving in New England and how Squanto, a Native American who knew English, helped them communicate with the Native Americans, taught them how to plant corn, showed them which bushes had nuts and berries safe to eat, and taught them how to fish. The culmination of the unit ends in a celebration where the children reenact the First Thanksgiving. They choose whether they would like to be a Pilgrim or a Native American, make placemats in Math Class using patterns, and they make their own butter in Science. The tables in each classroom are put together to make one long community table and the feast begins. We have been fortunate that Whole Foods in Andover has been our benefactor for the last four years, providing us with heavy cream to make the butter, corn bread, cranberry sauce and apple juice, for 85 students! Our cafeteria provides the turkey sandwiches, to make for an authentic feast. As you can see, a wonderful time was had by all!
